Sunken chest treatment
Procedure with customized implant
Sunken chest (also known as „pectus excavatum“ is a congenital malformation of the chest. Approximately 1-2% of the population suffers from this malformation, which can vary greatly in severity.
Depending on the severity, various forms of treatment are possible and appropriate. In cases of sunken chest that do not cause functional impairment, extensive surgery is not necessary. Here, we can visually correct the malformation by inserting a custom-made implant without performing complex and painful surgery on the bony chest.
We are delighted to be able to offer you this special and effective treatment method as one of five centers of excellence in Germany – the only one in the Duesseldorf area.

Your custom-made 3D silicone implant
After a consultation about the surgery and its procedure, a radiologist will perform a special CT scan of your chest. Based on the data obtained, anatomicmodeling can now calculate and design your individual silicone implant. The implant is then manufactured for you by the renowned company Sebbin.
If women additionally want breast augmentation with silicone implants, this is possible at the earliest six months after pectus excavatum correction. The breast implants should then be inserted in front of the chest muscle.
We take the time to address your questions, requests, and concerns, and provide you with transparent information about opportunities, risks, and possible complications.
Make an appointment nowIs funnel chest treatment advisable even if there are no physical impairments?
In most cases, sunken chest does not cause any physical discomfort. However, even if there is no pain or other physical discomfort or impairment, such as reduced function of internal organs, surgical correction may still be advisable. For many affected individuals, chest deformity causes significant psychological distress.
Unlike conventional surgical methods, where pectus excavatum correction is only recommended towards the end of puberty, funnel chest correction using a custom-made implant can be performed at any age without any problems, although the growth phase should already be complete.
What methods are used to perform funnel chest correction?
Our plastic surgery experts use customized silicone implants from the manufacturer Sebbin for sunken chest correction. The main advantage of this procedure is that the chest itself remains untouched. The Sebbin implant simply compensates for the deformation of the chest caused by the funnel chest.
Therefore, silicone implant-based surgery is only suitable for patients who do not have any physical complaints attributable to sunken chest. The implant is custom-made for each patient. A special three-dimensional measurement procedure is used for this purpose, which employs a computer tomogram of the chest and thus enables the implant to be adapted to the patient’s individual anatomy with millimeter precision.
What is the exact procedure for funnel chest correction?
Surgery to correct sunken chest is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately one hour. The implant pocket is prepared via a vertical, central incision of about 7 centimeters in front of the sternum, matching the size of the implant. The chest muscles in the middle area are then detached and the implant is inserted deep under the chest muscle and under the attachments of the abdominal muscles. Here, the implant has an absolutely non-slip fit. After insertion, the muscles are sutured again and the skin is closed with an intracutaneous suture and absorbable thread.
Based on experience, the hospital stay following the procedure lasts between one and two days.
After funnel chest correction
- Minimal postoperative pain
- Absorbable sutures
- No use of drains
- Wearing a support vest for 6 weeks
- Downtime of 2 weeks
- 3 months of restrictions on sports
What scars remain after funnel chest correction?
Our scar-saving procedure, which we use for sunken chest correction, avoids unnecessary incisions and thus also noticeable scars. To insert the Sebbin implant, we only need to make a short incision of about 7 cm. This small incision is also made at the lowest point of the sunken chest and becomes very inconspicuous once the scar has healed completely.
