Breast reduction
When an excessively large breast becomes a burden
Excessively large breasts can have a major impact on everyday life – both physically and emotionally. Common complaints include back pain, tension, postural problems or restrictions on exercise and sport. Weight fluctuations, pregnancies and age-related changes can also cause breast tissue to sag.
A breast reduction may be medically necessary to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life. Excess glandular, fatty and skin tissue is removed and a new, harmonious breast shape is sculpted. At our clinic in Duesseldorf, this procedure is performed using scar-saving, modern surgical techniques – for a permanently stable and naturally looking result.

Depending on the initial findings and the desired result, various surgical techniques are available. In most cases, excess glandular, fatty and skin tissue is removed, while lifting the breast at the same time. For this, several incisions are employed:
- Periareolar incision: The incision runs around the nipple and is usually used in case of minor excess volume.
- I incision (Lejour technique): In addition to the incision around the nipple, a vertical line runs downwards. This method is suitable for moderate excess breast volume and sagging skin.
- T-incision (anchor shape): In addition to the vertical scar, a horizontal scar is created in the under bust crease. This technique is used for very large and severely sagging breasts.
We will gladly explain to you in detail which method is most suitable for you in a personal consultation at our private clinic in Duesseldorf.
How does post treatment after breast reduction look like?
After breast reduction, patients usually stay for one day in our clinic for monitoring. To stabilize the surgical result, we recommend wearing a well-fitting sports bra for about six weeks.
To ensure that the scars heal softly and inconspicuously, they should be treated regularly with oily balm. In the first few weeks after the operation, it is important to refrain from sport and extensive arm movements so as not to impair wound healing. However, driving is usually possible after a brief recovery period.
How do the scars develop after a breast reduction?
The scar formation after breast reduction depends on the chosen surgical technique and individual wound healing. As a rule, the scars run around the nipple as well as vertically and possibly along the under bust crease.
Immediately after the operation, the scars initially appear reddish and slightly raised. With proper scar care – for instance an oily balm and consistent sun protection – they fade considerably after 6 to 18 months and are often only visible as fine lines.
We will advise you in detail on scar care and provide you with recommendations for optimal healing.
When can I return to sport after a breast reduction?
In the first few weeks after breast reduction, physically strenuous activities should be avoided so as not to jeopardize wound healing.
Light movements such as walking are usually possible early on. However, sports involving intensive chest movements such as jogging, swimming or strength training should only be resumed after about six weeks.
To support healing, we recommend wearing a well-fitting sports bra consistently during this time.
Does breast reduction reduce the risk of breast cancer?
During breast reduction, excess glandular, fatty and skin tissue is removed. According to current studies, this can reduce the individual risk of developing breast cancer by an average of around 28 percent. However, this depends on various factors and should be assessed individually during a personal consultation.
Is the ability to breastfeed impaired after breast reduction?
Whether the ability to breastfeed is maintained after a breast reduction depends on the chosen surgical technique and the individual anatomical conditions. We will be happy to explain to you what effects the planned method may have on your ability to breastfeed in a personal consultation.
